Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford started acting in her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She had been accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place right for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try made an application and secured an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford was able to graduate in 1993. However, she already had her TV debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties in shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Apart from her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
